Multi-Agent 3D Mapping
Two robots, one shared map — mapped on lunar-like analogue terrain.
This activity develops the multi-robot mapping capability at the core of RMAP: generating a real-time 3D map of the environment as robots move through it. Taara Robotics validated it at the Tartu Observatory Space Missions Simulation Centre, where the test site mirrors lunar conditions — sandy terrain scattered with rocks and small stones, feature-poor surfaces, and lighting that ranges from well-lit to complete darkness.
In the December 2024 final demonstration, two robots were driven independently around the site while a server processed their stereo views and continuously updated the shared 3D map in near real time. Operators saw each robot's position and the growing map on screen, helping them steer the robots and avoid obstacles.
